Post: Buying/renting a first car

Hey BP community!

I've got a dilemma. I leave for school and/or the navy in a timeframe of 2-9 months. I've decided that it would be against my best options to buy a used/new car because I would be paying for said car while in the service, when I would not be able to use it.

Would you all recommend renting a car, leasing a car, using a lease option for my family to use the price to buy when I leave, etc.

Any info much appreciated and willing to explain!

@Shaun R. it was a really great podcast for sure!

I also recommend BP episode 157 and Foundr podcast 143.

Both include absolutely life changing material..

@Keaton AllredI am also a newbie, but from Illinois :)

I would recommend reading Investing in Real Estate with No and Low Money Down by Brandon Turner. It may offer useful advice, although if you've already done a lot of research, it may not be worth it..

I am trying to find a mentor myself. That's what I think would be very beneficial to my REI learning experience. A good step is going to REIA and local REI meetings to network and meet possible mentors, for sure.

Hope that helps!

@William Hull That is an interesting study for sure..

As a young person myself, I can shed some light and say that my fellow peers are all worried about loading themselves down with college debt, house debt, credit card debt, etc. This is magnified through the fact that college degrees do not pay as much as they used to, making college education too expensive for the price being paid. The younger generation, myself included is wondering how we would be able to pay for everything, with jobs not being there and offsetting the cost of college. Due to this, many find that it is easier to rent instead, due to the typically lower cost of renting compared to home ownership.

There's my $.02 about it coming from a young perspective..

Hey Allen! @Allen Leavitt

I am assuming that since you are new to BP, you may be a newbie like myself..

I am from the Chicago-land area of Illinois. I've been researching and learning about REI for about three months now! There are plenty of resources on BP as through biggerpockets.com/books and various forums posts with anything and everything being discussed.

Feel free to message me anytime!

I do not know about the New Jersey side of things, but there are legal documents on BP. Also i believe there is a site called uslegaldocuments.com or very close to it. A simple search on google should yield many results. However, while access of online legal forms is easy, it is a double edged sword. These documents should be taken to an attorney to verify that everything is correct and works with your state law.

Hope that helps!

I am not in New Jersey, but I am also interested in this.

There is an online version of this game as well, but I don't know how to work it.

If there are any online games coming up, please let me know!

Hey man! Glad to hear you've been reading and keeping up on your market. You can always invest in other countries, especially in the North American market where I'm from. Anyhow, would love to hear more about your story! Feel free to PM me any time!
