Buying/renting a first car

Hey BP community!

I've got a dilemma. I leave for school and/or the navy in a timeframe of 2-9 months. I've decided that it would be against my best options to buy a used/new car because I would be paying for said car while in the service, when I would not be able to use it. 

Would you all recommend renting a car, leasing a car, using a lease option for my family to use the price to buy when I leave, etc.

Any info much appreciated and willing to explain!
