New to BP and to Real Estate Investing, Currently in Oregon
Hello BP: I am currently living in Sublimity Oregon and working out of Salem. I have been in the US Army for the last 17 years and am currently working in the Recruiting Command. I am looking to learn as much as I can about investing and am really anxious to get started ( I am literally dreaming about my first deal). I am open to suggestions as to how to get up and going. I am thinking along the lines of wholesaling, but not sure if that is the best move for my situation. All advice is welcomed. Great to meet you all.

@Jerry Daniels - welcome to BP Nation! I can't be the first to welcome you, since Mary beat me to it, but I wanted to be...(it's the thought that counts, right?)
First - thank you for your service. All of us here can do what we do in large part due to the choices you make every day. Thank you indeed!
Now - last time I checked, and I check every day, deals don't happen cause you dream of them. You've got to do something. You know this, but are, at the moment, confused as to what to do, and thus is your post...
Understand - real estate provides answers to our problems. This tees up the fact that what you do in real estate is a function of what problems you are trying to solve. Figure out what you want - then figure out which approaches and techniques answer the call of duty respectful of solving those specific issues - then build a matrix between those and your strengths, predispositions, and limitations. This way you'll be able to narrow down what to study. And then - study like hell :)
You are confused because you haven't approached this logically yet. To you RE is all one big wonderful concept, which it's not. The magic is in the details :)
Good luck!

Welcome to the wonderful world of BP :-)
Kudos,
Mary

Welcome to BP! Two years and three deals ago, real estate was a dream to me too. Follow Ben Leybovich and Jay Hinrichs (you can set your account so you are alerted whenever they post) and read all their stuff - it will help you figure out what is good advice and what is ignorance on the forums. And help you make fewer n00b mistakes.

@Jerry Daniels
BP is full of useful resources such as forums and blogs. Welcome to the Bigger Pockets community-be sure to check out all the awesome BP blogs under “Learn.”

Welcome to the Willamette Valley! I spend a vast majority of my time reading here and never posting. I live in Salem and currently work mostly with VA owned homes fixing them up after foreclosure. I can tell you from my own personal experience the rental market in South Salem is almost as hot as the weather right now. Renters are literally bidding for standard 3/2's right now because living in a nice area is still affordable here.
Wholesaling is what it is and if you can find success there by all means work those deals. If you're in need of affordable contractors, landscapers, or even real estate brokers, I'd be happy to refer you to my friends. Send me a message anytime my schedule is very flexible.
Welcome to Bigger Pockets and the freedom you sacrificed for all of us here at home.

welcome @Jerry Daniels
you are on the best site going
good luck

Welcome to Bigger Pockets! I help moderate a group of investors that meets monthly in Salem. We usually meet on the 2nd Thursday of each month. We'd love to have you join us and check it out. There are usually 20-40 people who show up. Some are pretty new and learning, some are very, very experienced, and a lot of folks are somewhere in the middle. We usually post our meeting topic on the website in the calendar of events so people can decide if they're interested ahead of time. Look for "Salem Round Table."
Again, welcome!
