@robert ilario Short and simple, taxes that have not been paid on real estate are sold by the county to pay for services, they attach a lien for your interest, if paid back then you receive interest, if not your may obtain a tax deed, it varies by state and county, but that is the general idea.

If done right, a person can make a years income for a few days of research and investing, in interest or properties to sell or rent out.  I have received deeds and sold most, but do have a tax deed rental I kept.

@Adrian Reyestax liens or certificates can bring in great returns, as stated above, check with county tax office and they typically will answer your questions, plus much about it on bp.  The long and short, we average 27% return, have gained many properties that did not pay us back, it varies but typically 90-97% pay us back, some of those that dont pay are empty lots or slivers, but have had several gems over the time we have invested in them.  Read and research, best to you!

@Toi H.In Alabama I invest in tax certificates, bought about 85 in Mobile Co, most have houses, warehouse, 4-plex, etc on them.  Guessing you are looking at state level, stuff no one bought at auction.  Plenty to choose from, we have 2 left that will probably be able to get tax deeds for, so would say drill down your search to county level and there should be plenty.

@Rob B.since you are looking for specifics on one county, you may not get a solid answer, so my thought is go to tax office and ask them, they will have the answers - thats how I started and it served me well.

Nuts and bolts simplified...

Tax lien - sold by county, against property that has not paid taxes, if not paid back within specific time then tax lien holder can get ownership via tax deed.
