Newbie Introduction - Los Angeles

Christian Sanchez

Hi Everyone!

I'm Christian, a new BiggerPockets member out of Los Angeles, California. I just joined the community a few days ago, but it already seems like a very helpful group to be a part of. I'm hoping to get to know a lot of you online and hopefully meet some of you in the area in person.

I guess the first thing I'd like to ask is if anyone has any recommendations for real estate clubs/groups in the Los Angeles area that meet regularly. I tried searching the forums for a group but I couldn't seem to find any meetings coming up soon. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to meet up in person.

I've also started to listen to the archive of Podcasts and am reading every book I can get my hands on. I'm already learning a lot but would appreciate any advice on moving toward my first deal. I've been thinking about the buy and hold strategy and hope to have my first property toward the end of the year or even earlier if I can make it happen.

Thanks for your help, and I look forward to getting to know everyone!

    @Christian Sanchez

Welcome. Consider student housing since you are a recent grad see below.

Check out the Start Here page http://www.biggerpockets.com/starthere

Check out BiggerPockets Ultimate Beginner's Guide - A fantastic free book that walks through many of the key topics of real estate investing.

Two Great reads, I bought both J. Scott The Book on Flipping Houses,The Book on Estimating ReHab Costs http://www.biggerpockets.com/flippingbook

Locate and attend 3 different local REIA club meetings great place to meet people gather resources and info.

Consider checking out HUD homes for small multi's owner occupied gets first crack.

You might consider Niche or Specialized Housing like student housing. Rents can be 2-4 times more. Remember you don't have to own a property to control it.

    Good Luck

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome!

Jeff Greenberg I live in Culver City but commute to downtown daily for work.

Paul Timmins Thanks for the thorough advice. I hadn't considered student housing before, but now that you mention it, it seems like there is a lot of opportunity worth exploring.

Ciprian L. Thanks for the heads up. Unfortunately I won't be able to make tonight, but I'm definitely hoping to make the next meeting!

Brandon Turner Your podcasts are amazing. Keep up the good work.

    Thanks again everyone!

Hi Christian, and welcome to BP! I’m a ‘fix and hold’ investor from the Bay Area in CA, and loving it! But you’ll find a variety of every type of investor on the site, and everyone is amazingly helpful. Some pointers for you: The "Learn" link across the top navigation bar has lots of great info, and so do BP members! You can click on the ‘vote’ button if you like someone's post or is helpful, and there are ‘awards’ to earn on your profile. And you can tag people by typing @ before you type their name, then clicking their name at the bottom of the message box. Welcome to the site, and good luck in everything!
