Having tenants SSN's and proof of income (paystubs) is not uncommon during the application process.

Just depends on a lot of factors (i.e. how much money is at stake, how much time you want to invest, how much info you have on your tenants, how collectible or judgment-proof your tenants are, your local laws and what methods of collecting on a judgment are permitted, etc).Best of luck to you and hope this situation works out for you, regardless of what you decide.
