This sounds like either a methy security system or dog fighting.

If they want to fight that fact, you might be on the losing end of that.

I see lease breaks all the time in my market ( Cambridge/Boston MA ) and typically if you can re-rent it without a loss to you then it isn't worth fighting over.

Much of society has a general sense of disdain towards both, because they see them as taking advantage of people who don't have the tools or resources to fight against them.
