Mike, some really good points. Self-motivation is key in doing anything. My friend is internally motivated to where he has become obsessive with finding wealth, but doesn't know how to get there yet. He's isolating himself from his friends and are critical of all of them. He was telling me he was "cutting" people off because they were slowing him down and wasting his time with useless things. Unfortunately, ALL of his friends were wasting his time. He still calls me because "I don't waste my time" now that I'm into RE. I do understand not doing "college-like" activities, cutting off friends, and isolating himself, but to blame others for failures seems like a mindset an REI cannot have.

Everyone has an opinion. I've been talking to a couple friends who think he is God Almighty. They wish for one day to meet him. Being the skeptic that I am, I attended one of these seminars ran by one of his speakers, and it was very infomercial-like showing uplifting stories and large sum checks that people loved. Seems obviously fake to me. I have read the first 5 chapters of "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" and honestly, it's nothing really special if you already have the mindset that you don't want to work for somebody else. I have to admit, Robert seems like one of the best mass marketers in the business. Anyways, I feel like I should tell these friends of mine how I feel.

Might I add, these 2 friends of mine are beginners (Ages 21 and 22) like I am and I don't want them heading the wrong direction thinking this stuff is easy. The other day my friend said he'd make $2000 cash flow within the next year. Is this even possible for a beginner who doesn't really know the business? Highly unlikely. I just say, " it's possible! but how are you going to do it?" ... he then says, "well, I buy this house... and sell it... and ... well i'll see what I can do". I'm not saying Robert's teachings are bad or anything, but maybe it can mislead some people who need "real" mentoring.

Never even heard of that show until now, is it worth watching or is it just for entertainment purposes?

This is probably obvious, but: What's the ultimate purpose for a buyer to rent out property? Pay off monthly expenses while getting positive cash flow, then after the house is paid off, sell the property?

I appreciate all your comments and suggestions. I'll definitely keep an open mind!

With regards to the "meetings" I went to, I don't mind spending $ for some quality training, but my "what the!" radar went off when these speakers were showing "what I could have" and "i'm not good enough so here's an easy way to get rich" for the first 1/2 of the lectures (and I tried to keep an open mind, but their techniques were just too obvious to me). There weren't any Q&As, but everyone just nodding and giving enthusiastic "yes's!", so maybe I went to a few bad "meetings".

I've been hearing a lot about taking as much action as I do sponging (my term for reading/learning), is this true for a beginner?

The main thing here @ biggerpockets is the positive support + informative/educational topics. People seem open to giving and receiving ideas. It's good energy.I'm excited to give back to this community. :pup:

Thanks to all.

Hi everyone, I'm a male 22 yr. old from Rancho Cucamonga. I've been into the real estate business for awhile now, a whopping 3 weeks! Ok, so it's not too long, but it's a start. I've read and heard a lot of success and failure stories, but I want to see for myself what REI is all about. I've been lurking for about a week and listening to podcasts in that time as well. I'm starting to understand RE a little bit more every day just by researching and hearing people talk about it. On another note, I've been to a few RE meetings and all they've wanted to do is sell me a $1k or $500 3-4 day training period in RE. Luckily for them, they catch about 10% of the people buying into it. Are most of those meetings like this? Are there any REAL real estate informative meetings and networking?
