I am enjoying being on BP for the forum parts focused on what I am interested in as there is way too much info on here not to try and focus on a small piece. I don't currently feel the need for a PRO membership but that will probably change and part of that is that it is mainly US based so it will be longer before I would see enough benefit to it.

The main thing I make use of is the Podcast. Locally we use the PIAs and local networking groups. As with anything you need to build good strong relationships with people first to help each other out before anyone will feel comfortable looking into joint deals , purchasing of products or just simply being involved to any great degree.

If we can build up the NZ investors using these NZ threads on BP we will get more and more traction out of it and may be a better vibe than PT?

Anyway good luck and like I say try getting in touch with CPIA.

K

Hi @Zamasu Sama

I agree with @Nick Fazakerley that your local PIA is probably the best place to get RE info for NZ. If you want some contacts for the CHCH association to flick me a PM/colleague request and I can forward you their details if you need.

We used to be on the committee of the Otago branch for years and you get your best insight to the business talking with those locally and the fees are usually really cheap for the amount of info you can access.

I agree with @Dean Letfus  that property talk is probably the only real forum type thing set up for NZ at the moment, unfortunately. I personally don't like the tall poppy rubbish that gets spouted over there so would much prefer to have something more NZ based build up over here where there is much more of a community feel for helping each other.

Try this forum thread where a number of the Kiwi's on BP have started to try to get together and help each other out https://www.biggerpockets.com/forums/86/topics/308...

Like I say sing out if you need any help?

Kyle

Hi @Edward Lee

Welcome to BP. I am local to you here in Dunedin so feel free to sing out with questions for help.

As mentioned on your other post joining the local PIA (property investors association) would be a great place to start to learn. We have just initiated a new student membership too even though we are one of the cheapest in the country anyway. Message me and I can fill you in more.

There are some other more local members here on BP who unlike me invest out of Otago and the South Island so they could be a help too depending on what you are planning to do but we have one of the better markets in NZ here to start with. @hadarorkibi may be a help if your thinking of more active than passive investing?

Cheers

Hi @Edward Lee

Welcome to BP. I see you have found the kiwi community forum as well and posted there which seems to be going well. I am local to you here in Dunedin so feel free to sing out with questions for help.

Hi @Ant Davies

Welcome to BP. There is a bit of a group trying to start up here on BP for NZ investors, here's a link to the main post to come over and introduce yourself:

https://www.biggerpockets.com/forums/86/topics/308...

Like @Hadar Orkibi  was saying APIA is the largest investor association in the country and has a load of great resources to choose from. Also, the BP podcast is a great tool especially if you're in Auckland traffic at all ;-) usually has a good choice of books that the guests recommend and then audible them for your drive or if you have a job where you can be listening to things.

Let us all know over in the Kiwi post what your planning to do with property and we can see if there is anyone here we can direct you too for help or feel free to flick me a message if there's anything I could help with?

Good stuff @Kevan Rasell

Have you written down those goals? Usually the best first step for that kind of plan.

Give me a shout if you want any help

Hi @Kevan Rasell

Welcome along. What are your plans for property investing, you looking to go full time or use it more passively in the background to use for say an early lifestyle of work when you want rather than when you have too? If you're looking for info then it's been mentioned earlier in the post that this year NZPIF national conference is on in a few weeks and is a great place to learn and meet people in the industry. For all those that hadn't heard about it or planned to go yet here is the link http://www.propertyconference.org.nz/items/view/57467/

The holes I have heard in that plan already are that if you buy a duplex for example and you live in one and rent the other the banks are still going to take that as an investor loan and apply the 40% deposit rule, at least in the short term till they understand the full implications of the new rules.

What a friend of mine did with the help from the bank though was get the rental appraisal (as the property was still finishing the reno whilst they were sourcing the funding) to show a flatmate type situation in the other unit (it is two 1bd places on one title so quite feasible) and hence it was able to be classed as a home owner loan with a flatmate to top up the mortgage payment. I am not sure the details or what they used in the way of income from the "flatmates" portion but they must have included some of it on the debt servicing calc considering the deal????

Hi all

Are any of you going to the NZPIF (New Zealand Property Investors Federation) national conference in New Plymouth?

If any of you are going let me know as it may be worth trying to set up a BP Kiwi meet up in the bar one of the evenings(yes I'm a southern boy at heart so the bar is the perfect spot ;-) ). If anyone knows anyone going that isn't in the forum then maybe point them here and we can start a bit of a kiwi area here with this positive vibe you get through BP? @Kevin Estey  @Azam Khan  @Hadar Orkibi  @Timothy H.  @Dean Letfus  @Takashi Sawada @Elwin Van Wees @Simon Kearns @David Logan @David Sherar @Benjamin Connor  please feel free to share this message with any other Kiwis on here you know?
