Make sure to pay for title search as part of due diligence. I usually buy land through tax sales never single family homes.

It will be difficult to find deals in the nice suburbs of Houston. But I find most of my deals in Harris county with the help of my realtor.

What kind of work are you trying to get done? If its a small scale project, I recommend going to home depot or lowes early in the morning (6am or whenever they open) and you should run into some decent contractors. Just be weary of anyone that ask for 50% upfront for the cost of the project if they are not insured or bonded. Make sure you get their insurance and bond info and call and verify it.
