Post: Carhacking...Renting a Car on Turo

Hey Jonathan,

I started a small turo fleet in San Antonio about mid November.  Below is what I've found thus far.

Cars:

2007 Honda Odyssey - Paid 5300 cash.  On average it rents for 40ish a day.

2010 Honda Insight -  Paid 4000 cash.  On average it rents for 32ish a day.

2016 Lexus IS  I financed this and the payment is 400 a month.  - On average rents for 55-60 a day.

Overall, it has been pretty good but very sporadic.  In December my first full month I'll gross over 1500 from the three cars.  The Insight pretty much stays booked (tomorrow it comes back from a week trip and is rented two hours later for another week).  The van has been somewhat consistent but is more of a niche vehicle.  The Lexus has only been rented twice in nearly a month and has been much slower than expected.  I bought this because I wanted a nice car to drive but expected it to actually rent well.

I plan to keep building the fleet, and plan to buy more economy cars and preferably hybrids and also hope to buy some nicer cars that I would never want to actually pay for but use this to fund those.   Everything I do is with lock boxes and remote pickup/dropoff which makes it pretty effortless.  It's been especially satisfying when I've been out of town and my cars are at home making money on their own.

Let me know if you have questions.

Hey Megan,

Welcome to BP.  I'm new investor (I have two properties in the process of becoming short term rentals and am looking for a 2-4plex) in SA and more recently a real estate agent.

If there is anything I can do to help with your process in San Antonio please let me know!

Jerry,

Based on my experience and knowledge of San Antonio and I would say your best bet would be get another agent who is local and familiar with the areas.  In San Antonio there are many pockets of areas and neighborhoods that are close in proximity but are demographically different and can vary in value white a bit.  I would assume many other cities share these qualities.  If I were to look outside of SA, I would seek to find investor friendly agents in those other markets.

Hey Frank,

Welcome to BP.  I'm newish investor from San Antonio (i have two properties in the process of becoming short term rentals) and more recently a real estate agent as well.  If there is anything I can do to help in San Antonio let me know and I would be glad to help.  If you need anything from a boots on the ground perspective don't hesitate, this stuff is fun for me and ultimately I want people to love my city and do well here.

Hey Javier,

Welcome to BP!   I have worked with @Brian Phelt and would definitely recommend him.   I bought my first property with him a few weeks ago and he’s been great. He also has a property management company and expertise in that area which has proven to be helpful as well.

Mikel,

In regards to San Antonio I would also tell you to look into various areas.  The tax rates vary quite a bit based on the part of town.  My tax rate is around 2.9% where I live in the city but I have coworkers who live outside the city and are at 2.1-2.2.

Mac,

This looks like it could be pretty cool and useful.  I'm local to SA and can help build it out.

Hey Oleg,

I've worked with @Brian Phelt and he's been great.  He also has a property management company that I haven't yet used, but with that comes good connections and resources that I have taken advantage of.  He's a good dude.
