I am a Paramedic and work 24 hour shifts, so I can't answer if I am on a call at work, and I put my phone on, "Do not disturb" mode when doing any daytime sleeping, (pretty much only the wife and my immediate work supervisor get through).

You can get residential and commercial from your building regs dept for permits.The city finance departments issue business licenses so you can get how many and how many new ones.You can find the increase in school aged kids from the public schools and the break down in districts will show population shifts of families.You can goggle for the areas MSA data (metropolitian statisical area) which should be showing HUD rent levels or from the local public housing authority broken down per bedroom.Call the unemployment office and ask for thier data, past numbers and present will show trends for local employment.Another source for information is the areas Builder's Association as they should know trends as to new homes and improvements.

It was interesting with the phone calls I took, as I noticed not too many people leave messages (I work 3rd shift so it was hard to be at the phone all day long) the ones that do, I would call back and most the time I would have to leave a message and if they called back or not it was hit or miss.
