Give them the exact same scope of work and check multiple references, insurance certificates, NARI or other memberships, standing with the contractors license board, any pending litigation, etc.

Actually I just added a Harbor Freight impact driver to my collection, when I started hanging 30 sheets of sheetrock and 25 sheets of concrete board for this bath project.
