Couches and upholstered furniture need to be replaced every few years.

It got down to the "brass tacs" of me having to explain a $300 deposit in my bank account for a couch we sold on Craigslist!! 

Here is the list of problems: The front door barely opens, NONE of the doors close correctly, garage door has been replaced but the electrical still needs work, no doorbell, no fire alarms or carbon monoxide alarm, no working outside lights, a severe mice infestation (who have now raided my brand new couch), no insulation in the mudroom because of a door installed incorrectly, which is allowing cold air into the house and raising my heating (propane!)

With short-term rentals, you could live in one room and rent out the spare rooms, an RV parking pad, a teepee in the yard, or even the couch.

@Jason Rego A MIC/private/B lender may be a good option for you. 

They are dropped, stepped on, battery fluid leaks out, or even get lost - sometimes behind the couch, sometimes under the bed, who knows.
