I'd remind them that most PMs and owners/landlords in my experience take up to 20 days or more to return it, but the BEST I can do given their situation is make sure to return it on the day they surrender premises and all keys, that is scheduled in advance.

I've found @Elizabeth Wilson 's approach works a high percentage of the time.Create a document (2 copies), Surrender of Occupancy, note date, time, amount given and the statement:I am surrendering possession of the unit at ________________ on this date and have surrendered the keys for the amount noted above.both parties sign and exchange one copy
