It's a City ordinance for us anyhow, along with not using or storing charcoal grills on wood porches- if they get tipped over they make a huge mess and of course are a fire hazard.

How to block off a fireplace?

So we used the High Heat type paint for grills and such and painted the interior black, and just closed the damper and told the tenants that the fireplaces cannot be used.Another option is that you can have them capped off at the top of the chimney.
