This is pretty interesting, and I wonder if it is sort of a cultural difference between my area of the country and perhaps the other areas respondents are from, that I see a really big deal with two licensees breaking the law, and everyone else is just kind of casual about it. 

Better weather and a generally better business climate down here.Richmond isn't super far south, but we do have better weather than up north and a very different culture. 

My guess is that the precise DNA in a union culture will be hard to pinpoint what that is, however I'd place a strong bet that by one 'trusting' a union to advocate on one's behalf, the main issue is that union members do not have agency, and get nearly zero experience in practicing negotiation and the soft skills requisite to be successful standing on their own in business.As always, generalizations are dangerous, and I'll continue giving ex union members chances in terms of labor, depending on my needs - AND you can always be the exception!

@Eran Nachlieli We’ve found Memphis to be a great location for us, low taxes, great culture, good opportunities, and all kinds of positives.

Hopefully you were able to make it out to Resident Culture for the meetup that Chris hosts, it’s usually a great group.

Understand your market. if it were me I would take the time and make the effort to go to these areas for the first few deals build a network, understand the area, culture laws etc and it will become quickly apparent if its your game.
