Recently moved to Boone, NC with my wife. We have invested in long term rentals in Tx where we used to live. I am now looking to start networking with local investors in western NC and more specifically in the Boone, Blowing Rock area.

@Walter Key sounds like a great deal, I am looking to get into STR in the area as well.
How much is Sarah Long knowledgeable about zoning and STR's ? I just moved to Boone, NC, looking for a primary residence but that will also allow me to build a least one STR on the land to offset my cost of living.

@Zach Sprau thank you for your input, it was very helpful, I found the article talking about the recent town meeting on STR.
I think we would be fine with either Boone or Blowing rock but would most likely try to look outside of city limits to not get too many constraints. 

Can you tell me more about your house hack ? Did you get a duplex planning on renting the other side?
