Post: Anything equivalent to Renatus "COURSE" cheaper or free?

Yes I did, I got all the bells and whistles. Yes, and all the separate vocational tracks. I was skeptical about the quality or the education but I've learned things in those classes that I've never heard anywhere else.  (Again, maybe I could have found it by myself but it would have taken much longer)

It was worth it for me. I have spent a lot of time at local real estate investment clubs, taken investors out to lunch, read lots of books, and so forth. I didn't really start having success until I started working with Renatus. My mentor is awesome. He's done lots of deals and is very willing to help me succeed. It was hard for me to find someone like that before. And the education itself is very good quality in my opinion. It gives your more than just a high level introduction. It walks you through the details and gives you specific scenarios.

It really depends on the character of the people that will be on your "team". If you sense that they will really help you and they're are actually doing deals and not just marketing, then it could be the right path.

I think BP is going to beef up their educational videos in the near future. I would also see what they have so far and make sure you watch everything they have.

In conclusion, evaluate the people that would be "mentoring" you if you joined Renatus. Ask them how many deals they have done and why they joined. Ask them specifically what they have learned from the education and how they have applied it. If they can give you satisfactory answers and you feel good about working with them, its probably a good fit. If they are inexperienced and are too focused on marketing, learn as much as you can outside of Renatus or scout around inside Renatus to find more knowledgeable people.

I hope that helps!

Hi Terrell,

I'm in Utah where Renatus seems to be growing a lot. I bought the full package. I was a BiggerPockets reader long before I knew Renatus so I knew I could probably build my own "curriculum" if I looked around enough. I won't go into why I chose to go with Renatus, as most people on this site who do that are criticized a bit.

I believe the best way to find books that are "equivalent to the courses" is to find out who teaches each class and find their material online and through their books.. For example, Mark Kohler teaches all the Tax and Legal strategy courses. I'm guessing you can get most of the important information that he teaches in those courses from his books, so google his books and read all those. Then find the instructor of another appealing class and look for their books, podcasts, or whatever else they have. If you have trouble finding the names of the teachers of all the Renatus courses, let me know and I can help out. I'm a big fan of doing things on your own and saving money. Each person's situation is different--for me it wasn't worth assembling my own curriculum. But if you have the motivation, go for it.

I read a post a few weeks ago about deciding whether to purchase education. While Renatus isn't a typical "guru" course in my eyes, this article can be helpful in deciding which route to take...https://www.biggerpockets.com/renewsblog/2012/05/2...

Good luck!

Congrats! Rich Dad Poor Dad was also the book that helped me face my life head-on. I'm envious that you are starting at 21. You're on the right path!

If you haven't already, add the biggerpockets podcasts to your playlist.

Make sure you go to Salt Lake REIA each month and network with investors as often as your schedule permits. Let me know if you need help finding Salt Lake REIA.

Make sure you also set up keyword alerts for subjects you'd like to learn more about. For example, you could set one keyword to "salt lake" and get notified anytime people mention salt lake.

Here's  forum about the SLC market: https://www.biggerpockets.com/forums/763-salt-lake...

I'm in Provo, but I like to meet investors all over Utah. Message me if you'd like help with anything or have any questions.

Good luck!

Hi Erin. I live here in Provo. I don't know much about student housing, but I do know that there is money to be made there if you know what you're doing. As a student, I have spent many busy days looking for a place to rent (for a married couple). There sure is a lot of demand in the fall and winter semesters.

With 140k you could get quite a few properties if you finance it right. I would read Brandon Turners book on investing with no money down to see how you can best leverage your money.

Also, I just started BiggerPocket's tax book and I think it would help you decide how to pull out your cash in the most tax-savvy way. https://get.biggerpockets.com/taxbook/

Here is a blog post about student housing: https://www.biggerpockets.com/renewsblog/2015/07/2...

Here is a podcast with Bill Syrios who specializes in student housing (Oregon could be different than here, but it is still useful): https://www.biggerpockets.com/renewsblog/2015/09/1...

Good luck! Glad to see a new member from Utah on BP.

I don't feel like I have a solid grasp on the status of each market quite yet, so I don't want to give you any misleading advice. My friend @Tim Mellor has some rentals in Springville and Spanish Fork(?). He initially thought he might have trouble renting them, but he's had success there. (I believe he has a duplex and maybe an SFH). I would just focus on whatever market makes the most financial sense for you and then make it work.

I've been focused on single families with mother-in-law apartments and discounted multi-families. I've been looking FSBO signs, tall grass, worn down houses, and properties that have been listed for a long time. It's a fun way to stay motivated about investing.

Hey Aaron! I'm envious of your marketing background. That will definitely help with generating leads for good deals.

I'm also from Provo and have some background in web development. I'd like to learn more about internet marketing. I'll message you and maybe we can meet up to chat.

In my experience, properties do sell quickly in Utah Valley. However, there are always opportunities that aren't on the MLS if you look hard enough. "Driving for dollars" has been one of my favorite methods. I have found some vacant or distressed properties this way.

@Kammon Hiatt and I are also interested in BRRR. Perhaps we could benefit from learning about it together.

Hi @Matthew Bangerter! Welcome to BiggerPockets! I love finding new investors from Utah here. I'm from Provo and also pretty new to real estate investing.

Looks like you have a great background to support you in your real estate investing efforts. You'll have a leg up on some other investors.

I have gotten almost everything I needed from this site. It keeps getting better. The three best resources for me have been the forums, the podcasts, and this list of books: https://www.biggerpockets.com/renewsblog/2015/11/1...

If you're interested in meeting other investors, you can go to UREIA, SLREIA, or UVREIA. Maybe I'll see you at one of the meetings! Otherwise I'll see you around on the site. Let me know if you need anything!

Good luck!

Hi Spencer. In my opinion, Like @Chris Erwin said, the best way to get into the industry is to meet like-minded investors in your area. Here are some Utah real estate groups that I am a part of:

SLREIA - http://slreia.com/

UVREIA - https://uvreia.com/

UREIA - https://www.utahreia.org/

I've found that going out to lunch with people from Biggerpockets is a great way to get connected too. Let me know how I can help.

Hey Scott! Biggerpockets is changing my life. Thanks for reaching out. I'm excited for you.

SLREIA - http://slreia.com/

UVREIA - https://uvreia.com/

UREIA - https://www.utahreia.org/

I've found that going out to lunch with people from biggerpockets is a great way to get connected. The groups listed above are excellent as well. Maybe I'll see you at on of them! Let me know how I can help!

Happy investing!

Looks like we have similar goals. I'm in Provo and I'm also looking for my first property. The UREIA and UVREIA meetings have been a great resource for me so far. I've also had great luck asking people to have lunch and discuss real estate. Let me know if you need help with anything or if you want to meet up sometime. Good luck!
