Tiffany, you might want to start by trying out the BP podcasts.  There are hundreds of them.  There is a wealth of information in them.  I started at #1 and am now at #237.   That's all I listen to on my drive from and to work everyday.

Welcome Andrea,

Your drive to become financially independent rings a bell.  I had the same reasoning that drove me for my journey into Real Estate.   I was able to pickup my first flip after approximately 3 or 4 months on Bigger Pockets.  I'm having a blast with it.  And I'm sure you will as well.  If I can recommend anything, I would say start by learning your neighborhoods well.  Do a lot of driving around in neighborhoods that match your criteria of a decent place you would want to live.   You can use Zillow to help you get  values for homes and their price histories in the areas as well.

One thing I can say is, Grand Rapids is a great place to start.  it is a growing community and a great place to live.  For that reason I am planning on holding and or flipping homes out there in the near future.

Anyways,  just like  @David Stevoff said,  I too am following a similar path.  I am starting with fix & flips.  Eventually I will get into buy and hold rentals.  I just closed on my first property in Southfield, MI on the 17th of this month.
