But what about all the emotional distress you've caused him???

I think this is somewhat debatable. Do turnkey companies and referral networks have any responsibility to oversee the conduct of their business partners? For me, the devil is in the details...

Your site makes the following claims:

  • "We connect you with property teams with proven track records"
  • "We are here to coach you"

The Morris Invest website, on the other hand, states the following:

    • 1) Schedule a consultation
    • 2) Get your property match
    • 3) We do the rest

Their site goes on further to describe the actions required of the customer:

    • Sit back
    • Cash your checks
    • Watch your wealth grow

Despite telling their customers "We do the rest" and describing their business as a completely passive endeavor, Morris Invest had the audacity to blame their victims for not taking ownership and action in a since-deleted "apology" video.

It absolutely baffles me that the MI website still makes the above claims. I thought for sure their pitch would have changed as these legal problems began to pile up.

I appreciate that your website is much more forthcoming and transparent about the services your company provides.

Excellent points Jeremy.  Thank you for pointing that out.

Fraud accusations should go through the legal process, or it could potentially be used against you as liable - especially if the courts determine it was not fraud. In this case, it seems there are enough people affected that they could do a class action lawsuit to share costs? Offering honest reviews on your personal experience seems fair, though - to inform and protect future buyers with insights on your personal experience. But I'm not an attorney...

I can tell you, as an owner of a large income property referral company, we have been let down by many providers in the past. It's difficult to control because when we are not licensed in a state, we cannot be involved in the details of specific transactions. When we "vet" a provider, we are only looking at their past track record, but cannot control their future actions. Sometimes they go rogue... so we have learned to spend our time educating our members before making referrals so they know how to protect themselves. And to PLEASE come to us with questions if something smells fishy. And to ALWAYS get 3rd party inspections, appraisals, AND to go see the property and meet with management. AND to always go through title and escrow, and NEVER pay for renovations upfront. And to be CLEAR in the contract on what is being renovated, making NO assumptions. That's a LOT of ALL-CAPS! :-)

If we get a complaint about a property provider and that company doesn't fix the issue, they come off the referral list. That's about the extent of our power over them.

Anyway, I do hope investors are somehow able to recoup losses in this situation.

Morris Invest preached the exact opposite:

    - DON'T get 3rd party inspections
    - DON'T visit the property
    - DO pay for renovations upfront

And any questions or concerns went unanswered. Unanswered by email, unanswered by telephone. Any communication was a black hole...

Obviously, I don't understand this issue well enough and am thankful that @James Wise is giving you a strong voice. I will request that Clayton remove my interview. My motivation for doing it was to give his listeners solid advice so they know how to protect themselves in the future. It was not meant as an endorsement, but I see how it could be interpreted that way. Please let me know how I can be of help in your efforts to recoup your losses.

Thank you Kathy - I appreciate that offer. And I may look into the Real Wealth Network in the future. Here's another little tidbit of information about Morris. Did you know that he called my employer earlier this month and spoke with the HR department complaining that I was online harassing him and making threats against him? I don't know what he was thinking - is he trying to get me fired? It seems like petty whining from a person who claims to 'help others obtain financial freedom...'

It was also an opportunity to hear his side of the story (off-line.)   I have personally not seen the new evidence you have - hopefully that has gone to the right authorities. I remain neutral on this issue as I am not involved and am not a litigator. Maybe I made a mistake by going onto his show, but I figure that Americans are innocent until proven guilty. I will let the judges decide his fate. And I will continue to educate as many people as I can on how to protect themselves when investing in rentals. James, I do appreciate the work you are doing. I'm just a little unclear on what drives you to do it. If he's being sued, it seems that the proper authorities would be looking into it. I am not trying to make enemies here. Just trying to understand your motivation.

Kathy - the hundreds of investors that Morris defrauded are regular people, like myself. We don't have YouTube channels with thousands of followers. We don't have large Twitter audiences. We literally have no voice online to be heard in any meaningful way. I'm thankful for James' efforts on our behalf because he does have a medium to get our message out there. We want justice. And justice is slow, meanwhile, Morris keeps pushing ahead completely unapologetic for the financial ruin he has left hundreds of investors in.

This is what he is, in the end. This is what it looks like when the snake comes out of the egg. I'm sorry this is happening to you, Chris. Sorry, but not too surprised.

Thank you - but it's no skin off my back. HR isn't going to do anything. The only thing they may do is tell Clayton to go F off...

You are fortunate IMO. I could see something like this going the other way too. People are strange.

     What do you mean?

What if your HR person didn't like you? What if your boss didn't like you? What if instead of being a nice guy everyone likes, you're the harmless weirdo everyone thinks is strange and thinks is creepy? What if the HR person or boss just like to be nitpicky and over-reactionary out of irrational fears?

I worked in a nursing home once. As a guy, I was definitely not liked for that reason alone by many people. I had people trying to get me fired or in trouble left and right, despite the fact I was an exceptional worker and the residents loved me. That part of the job was not fun and very real. The place was small. The place was political. The place was cut-throat. Something like this, where a person from the outside, someone from the holy television, calls in and makes an accusation of harassment would not have been laughed at.

I would consider an attack of this nature very serious if it happened to me. Jim is right, it shows what sort of person Clayton is. A normal person takes another person to court if they have an issue. Crazy people make it personal and go for personal things - you know, like a drug cartel might. Finding out who you are, where you work, who the HR person is, calling them and telling a story - that's ruthless and crazy. The problem could have been, what if the people you work with are just as crazy???

My workplace isn't like that at all - we're all very friendly and get along great. It's really a great place to work. Heck, maybe Clayton will submit his resume!
