It is defiantly separated. each part has own kitchen, own entrance. Both units connected by staircase, but we are planning to block that stair case, so it would be accessible only to one unit.
We just concerned about the paperwork regardless renting place out. Trying to make everything legal.

Hello!
We are in a tricky situation and will appreciate any advise!

We were originally planning to buy duplex, so we could rent one unit and live in another. But ended up buying a house with a big upstairs "in laws suite". How do we rent it out legally? do we need to turn it into multi house first? do we register it as rental as it is? what is the legal process before we start posting adds and start looking for tenants.
I understand we should had think this through prior to buying, but numbers looked good and we went for it.

Thank you Michele!
why did you decide naming your daughter Anastasia, if I may ask? it`s the same as Anastasia just different spelling. Mine just translated from my native language, that`s why the spelling is a lil different.

Hi everyone!
Me and my husband bought our first property!
The process was rough, but finally we closed. We started preparing the house for renting right way. I am looking through different samples of leasing agreements, but do I need to go to a RE attorney to make specifically made for us lease?
We live in Lansing, MI. Anybody can refer me to a good but not too expensive attorney?

"good shape" i mean the roof and the foundation are in great shape...everything else is good accept the electrics
Any ideas how much cushion we need to ask for the electrics. I assume (4000-8000?)

Hey everyone!
We are in a process of buying our first duplex. We had our inspection and unfortunately  it showed us some electrical problems. Basically all the wiering needs to be replaced. House is very old but in a really good shape!

Numbers looked really good.

My worry that fixing electric issues in 2000 sqft feet old house will cost too much money and lead to more problems.
Any suggestion? Should we just walk away and look for different hose?

Hello everyone!

Me and my husband just put an offer on a beautiful duplex. We are planning to live in 1 unit and rent the other one.
This is a multifamily house but it is listed as a single family. Is it something we have to worry about? Should we convert it into a multifamily on paper? And how much that would cost.
And if we live there, do we still need register the other unit as a rental?

What`s the legal process to start renting?

Very helpful tips @Victor N. and @Lesley Resnick!

Looks like too much hassle..didn't think it would be so complicated!

I'm just going to look for a ready duplex on a market and not bother with trying to turn single into multi.

Thank you!
