Hello everyone!
My name is Alex Plott and I'm currently a junior at Baylor University studying accounting and finance. I have no previous experience in real estate.
I was originally brought to this website by realestateinyourtwenties.com!
I'm excited to engage in learning and discussion with you all!

Good evening Alexander. Welcome to BP! Welcome to the club, I am also in search of financial freedom. Sounds amazing doesn't it! Only advice I can give you at this point, as a fellow newb, is to do what I'm doing, and try to "break" the learn tab everyday!
Good luck!
James

Welcome to BP @Alexander Plott. My first wholesale deal was in Waco actually (home town) while I was attending Texas A&M.
Anyway, BP is the right place to get started. Dive on in and plug in to any local REI meetings to network.

Thanks James! I'm about to start reading "Rich Dad, Poor Dad". Heard it was good!

Thanks Chris. I still have a couple years before I can invest in a property and Waco is definitely at the top of my list to start looking.
Great to have you on the BP community! It's always fantastic to have a goal in mind at a young age and good to hear that you've chosen to do real estate. This industry is hard work but no other areas provide the potential for better returns than RE. I agree with the others, when first engaging in RE, try to learn and read as much about the area you're interested in (buy and hold) as you can. My recommendation for a book is Millionaire Real Estate Investor by Gary Keller.
Best of Luck!

Welcome !! I do agree with @Vinh Le. Millionaire Real Estate Investor by Gary Keller is a good book followed by The Wall Street Journal, Complete guide of RE. I would save as much money as you can. Money talks and opens doors ! I close on my investment home tomorrow finally. Trust me, everything adds up !!

Welcome Alex,
All these books are great motivational tools and I have read them all. That said, you can't learn how to ride a bike by reading about it. Jump on and figure it out.

Welcome to Bigger Pockets. BP is a treasure chest full of resources. You will find resources here from blogs to pod casts and forums. You can also send messages to members which is my favorite part of the website.

Welcome.
Locate and attend 3 different local REIA club meetings great place to meet people gather resources and info. Here you will meet wholesalers who provide deals and rehabbers (cash buyers). Find them through Google and meetup.com
Two Great reads, I bought both J. Scott The Book on Flipping Houses, The Book on Estimating ReHab Costs http://www.biggerpockets.com/flippingbook
Consider checking out HUD homes for small multi's owner occupied gets first crack.
You might consider Niche or Specialized Housing like student housing. Rents can be 2-4 times more. Remember you don't have to own a property to control it.
Download BP’s newest book here some good due diligence in Chapter 10. Real Estate Rewind Starting over
Good Luck
Paul

Hi @Alexander Plott!
Hi Welcome to Biggerpockets!
Wishing you all the success on your real estate venture!

Anytime Alex.

Welcome to BP! I'm also a student here in Waco, though I go to Tarleton rather than Baylor. BP is a great place to meet new people and learn. I myself have just gotten into the learning phase of REI but im anxious to get started. One of the great suggestions you will hear when getting started is to go to meetings and meet investors, and I promise if you go to the right meetings, you will meet some people who will motivate you to succeed in this industry. The big issue however is that they are impossible to find here in town if they even exist at all (if I had experience, I'd probably start one myself). I haven't been to too many meetings, but the ones that I have gone to I've driven to Austin and Dallas for some are worth every hour, mile, and penny in gas, and others are glorified sales pitches. Find some of the good ones, make friends and contacts, and network yourself. I'm pretty sure that McLennan County has foreclosure auctions on the first Tuesday of each month at the county courthouse, may be a good place to find some cash buyers and investors in town, and not far off campus. I have yet to go to one due to scheduling conflicts in the past, but do intend on going next tuesday (7/7) just to get a feel for everything and maybe meet some new people in town. Other than that, pick up a few books, and listen to the podcasts, you'll learn more than you ever thought was out there.

Welcome @Alexander Plott. Buy and hold has been my chosen strategy over the years as well. Always so impressed by those of you who are starting this young - way to go! Let me know if I can ever be of help to you here in Houston.

Thanks for the advice! I've been looking for REI clubs near Waco and have come to the same conclusion. Being a student there's a little more flexibility in being able to travel to Austin or Dallas for a club. For the ones that you have gone to, how long do they typically last?

They usually last about an hour or two. there is a really good one that I try to get to each month in south Austin held by @Guy Gimenez called "partnering to prosperity". Guy alwasys provides great content, and seeks to provide value in everything he does. Other than that, just jump on meetup.com and expand your range to at least 100 miles so you can pick up some meetings in Dallas and Austin, possibly further if you're willing. just remember that some of these are better than others, and if you hear the words "this is not a sales pitch" it probably is.

Hello Alexander,
Welcome,
I just want to say congrats on your looking to the future, and I know that with your attitude you will succeed in anything you attempt.
I have been an Agent for about15 years but never did the Investor thing though I always wanted to.
If only I had BP back then.
Now I have this bug that won't leave me alone, I have to do it and it has to be now.
# Just remember this is a business and you have to make a plan, think about what you want.
# Put pencil to paper then read the Guide here on BP it is a wealth of information and assistance.
# There will be people jumping over walls to help if you need it here.
Well thats all for now.
Let's get cracken!
