@Marc Globenskymy quick 2cents:  Real estate maybe for growth and diversification, but definitely stocks or other more passive investment incomes for less headache and freedom of wealth. 

Ultimately wanting a passive income flow and freedom to be able to visit our families in California and possibly grow in other states as well!
