I was sadly disappointed when I spent all my money on stamps, envelopes, and bandit signs, fees to affiliate with the brokerage, mris, realtor fees, etc to no avail.

Obviously loan officers like to see a perfect employment history but is it better to have a slight gap or to have that big ugly unemployment stamp on my record?

Find out who the latest trustee is or find out through the latest owner of the note so that you can see who currently holds the deed and what going on with it.If the property was seized directly by the court via attachment and the bankruptcy was not settled, the court might still might have direct custody possibly.Keep in mind the county recorders office is just a constructive notice place where people can time stamp their claims of ownership.

Great question, I can't answer it exactly but I can tell you from experience that your response rate will be much better if you say you will be living there and not (just) an investor.Since this is your personal home, I would consider narrowing the list down more and sending a legitimate, handwritten and stamped letter.
