What I mean by this is if you were to punch a hole into the wall you would be hitting the exterior wood siding.

A couple considerations: -The back of house butts up against a dense wooded area and a creek. 

Depending on what has already been done you could be looking at wiring, plumbing, and foundation issues, sagging floors that need support or leveling, asbestos and lead paint issues, rotten wood from old leaks, etc.

My brother (who is not a professional carpenter, but can get the job done) offered to fix the wood supports and repair the steps.

If I sold them all I couldn't buy anything in your neck of the woods.
