If the kitchen is modern design and has stainless appliances, you can buy a roll of sheet stainless and glue that up as back splash.I don't think it is cheaper than tile, but it's definately quicker.

They make some designed to handle steam in a bathroom or paint wooden with a semi or high gloss paint as long as water won't be on it constantly you should be ok.Brian Haskins

I contacted this individual, and asked a bunch of questions on this and I understand that this process would take between $6-8k to evaluate and design a system for permitting – this cost would not include the actual septic system.
