There are many ways to do it, it's a matter of what makes the most sense for your situation.Start researching what areas you want to eventually live in- that also have a good rental market.

I own a triplex and was wondering if I could use one unit as a short term rental to offset my W2 income as a trader business.

Castle Rock actually doesn't regulate Airbnb or shirt term rentals, so you're good there (as long as you're not in an HOA).

I would add that the current Utah investment market is red hot and it is hard to find good rental units for a decent price.
