You are technically creating a mother in law suite. city most likely wont grant you separate address (still ask learn and try) but what you can do is use the standalone address and then add a second mailbox and label the doors unit 1 and unit 2 this is acceptable and wont cost you time and money

Apparently the mother is not in the picture and has issues of her own to deal with.

My mother and father FINALLY retired this year at 78.
