It's probably still true that bathrooms and kitchens can impress (or turn off) both a potential tenant or a buyer. 

I just REFI my house and want to rehab my Kitchen/Bathroom.

If it's truly abandoned, you will notice most/all clothing is gone, there's no high-value items like flat-screen TV or computer, all the food is gone or old, most kitchen items are missing, etc.

House hacking is just a 21st century term for what old timers have done forever.
