The company that issued the new loan in 2014 should have paid off the 2004 loan but if they did not or if they did but there is no record of it then the house is way underwater and you should stay far away.I see lots of weird situations like this in deed records and usually it's some type of paperwork error but occasionally it's a mammoth mistake.

I had a vacant  unit that I was so desperate to rent out to anyone hat i literally had my property manager heading over to show it to a woman that had TWO Pit Bulls, Who was having "a hard time finding a place" that occasionally smoked (I don't have smokers in any of my rentals) and was on disability.

Additionally, there are a finite amount of deals at any given time, which is why investors compete for those deals and occasionally cooperate when it is in their best interest.
