I think the good news is a person with a bit of maintenance ability (at least that of an average homeowner) and some fair people skills (what you'd need to work with others in a business or other organization) can probably make it as a landlord... with the desire and some reading....Yes, you may get some light bulb requests (I have a had a tenant or two who could not change, one, go figure), and you can even find a good plumber on the leaks...But some people think of horror stories when they first consider landlording (probably more from hollywood movies than reality, but it can happen without careful screening)..As Mark Twain said, " I am an old man and have known many troubles, but most of them never happened"....

But when its not there, then doing the house hack with a single family home is probably the next best thing.As an owner occupant, you can get low money down loans and even get loans (203k) where youc n roll the rehab costs into the loan as well.
