As far as the basement being damp and dark, that's not the case here.

It needs some color.

Even if you found a hard money/private lender, being it is your first deal, they're gonna want you to have some "skin in the game."

But pasadena is weird.There are other rental homes in nearby towns with tiled floors, and they all use neutral colored tiles and look ok.

Ghetto apartments in my area have high turn over rate, they always charge you a carpet cleaning fee at the end but I know most of the time the don't even clean them if they are decent; that's why their carpet always a darker color because they hide dirts so well.
