This seems like a bit of a gamble for you b/c of the lack of budgeting for normal expenses.  

The employment to population ratio is sitting at about 68% where a thriving town like Ann Arbor, which Ypsilanti borders, is sitting around 77%.

Might have to expand the borders!

I have considered a long driveway but then I'd be required to engineer, pave and sidewalk the primary access road that borders a creek for several hundred feet.

Also, in towns/cities with large selling price disparities like Lowell, you can find good opportunities because good areas will border average areas and average areas will border bad areas.

Maybe put some stone down, bordered by brick or 4x4's.

This is a gamble but possibly worth the risk if you are a risk taker.
