They often might, at most, file taxes jointly, but otherwise maintain segregated checking/savings/credit/etc accounts, and sometimes I've seen them have one giant 'money bucket' joint account that can be down payments for either spouse (because you can't use gift for down payment on an investment property) depending on what pops up, and which spouse likes it better.
