Regarding Roth IRA contribution limits.......

Good Morning :)

Hopefully I'm posting this in the right forum. My question is regarding Roth IRA contribution limits. I have been maxing my pre-tax employer 401k and was wanting to max my Roth as well when I noticed that there are limits. My wife and I file jointly and it says that over a certian amount of MAGI it gets phased out. Ours according to thr taxes we just filed is 188,501 so apparently can contribute a reduced amount according to the calculators Ive seen. My question is for example if the calc says we can contribute say 3800 does that mean each of us can or is that total? Im confused. What would happen if we actually contributed more than we were aloud to because we made more than we anticipated during a given year? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as we sre totally confused lol :(
