I didn't know much about real estate at the time but I wanted to learn from him because he seemed to know a lot about it, so I thought he could guide me through the process by having me invest in a place and showing me how it is done.

So far this seems to be the best resource for information and advice I can find without paying for a seminar that just wants to upsell for a longer seminar. 

BP also has free guides on the site and the various BP books are excellent too.

@Roy Cleeves is also a great resource and an active investor in your local market.
