Went through 2 iterations of our plan with an architect only to discover it cost too much to build.Earlier this year we looked into a container home only to be shot down by the zoning commission.Construction costs have come down since last year so now we're looking at a very small stick-built cabin.

Second, it would be very easy to either paint that rock to tone it down a bit or place a container plant in front of the wider section of gray rock to camouflage it slightly.

The way I see it, you rented the house in as-is condition, which contains wiring that isn't code now but was code when it was built and a property owner has no obligation, if the law doesn't require it, to upgrade homes to meet new building codes.
