Personally I do mine in Utah, simply because it's cheap (if not the cheapest) to buy, and cheap to renew (and I live here).Really the best thing you can do is contact an estate planning attorney that understands Real Estate ownership AND asset protection, as they go hand in hand.

Take a look at the UT LC - cost is super low (under $200, compared to CA at over $800), you can register the LC yourself on the state website, renewals are super cheap - less than $20, and you can get a registered agent here pretty cheap also.
