I understand that you need a demolition permit to demo a house, but once you have that, are you allowed to demo a house on your own with whatever hired help you deem fit, or are you forced to hire a contractor to do it?

You have to test for it, then if present handle the demo of that item as hazardous material.Good: ask for the insurance report.
