Yes, it can cause damage but so can a lit candle.

I am a bit of a hippie and like people and want the best for everyone.

I prefer them to have electric stoves, and electric water heaters--two less things for them blow themselves and the other units to Smithereens.Those coiled gas lines do leak from time to time, and the other things I don't like in the units are candles (open candles or religious candles in a colored glass from the local grocery store) or live Christmas trees.

Ex: small bottle of dish soap, a few hand towels for the kitchen, sponges, pledge wipes, maybe a small Candle or a Glade plug in. 

But at that point you are burning the candle at both ends and working a combined 60-80 hours per week.

She denied smoking and claimed it was a candle before aggressively slamming the door in my face.

We have strict rules in our lease including, no smoking, no candles, no grease fryers and no open grease frying on the stove top.

Candle, space heater, smoking, etc.

Unfortunately, kitchen fires, cigarette fires and candle fires are all too often occurring in residential rental property.
