I've experienced a couple changes in their reinvestment schemes and as such I basically own tiny portions of each of their offerings.

In that specific case, and this is the UK, the operator was found guilty of running an illegal scheme the lack of FCA registration.

Tenant should fly/drive to view the property (most likely working more than one owner with this scheme), apply to rent the one(s) that work for them and pick the one with the best terms for them.

Do you think I should try it out, or is there some kind of scheme that I'm not aware of?

Someone suggested (I can't find the thread now) in that thread to paint units in a two tone color scheme. 

I am not a get-rich kind of guy, and am just looking to make a fair profit, yet the promises from these gurus are strong.If you go into it with the mindset that this is a get rich slow scheme and you have the necessary patience, commitment and perseverance you will do just fine.

Do these nationwide investing schemes really work?  

It is not how do you get to buy with no assets, knowledge or effort as some scheme.
