I would say that the solution is patience and persistence but I may have missed something in your post.

Basically, people (and rats) will persist in doing something, even with little or no return, if they are given the tiniest bit of hope of a coming reward.

I eventually persisted and ironed out the wrinkles and now pretty much make money on every deal.
