The easiest DIY solution (that I think would look decent) would be to get some (gel) wood stain in the closest color you can find to touch up the scratches then remove the handles and do two coats of (satin finish) polyshades in a color slightly darker than the doors are now (probably bombay mahogany).

One cheaper/quicker option to update the kitchen instead of paint might be to use a gel stain on the cabinets to give them a darker, more contemporary look.

You're also going to need to repair/replace gel coat and carpet every few years.Aramark runs the concessions at Lake Powell, Lake Mead, etc.

We bought a duplex for $44K at the bottom of the market and it was quite a disaster with sloping floors and enough nicotine on the walls to give you cancer!
