My 10 year goal is to build at least $20,000 a month in passive income in order achieve some financial freedom, but I also see real estate investing as my true passion post military.

Read more books, and just keep moving forward, your passion will drive you and your income! 

Besides this, rather boring, pastime of writing code, I also happen to be extremely passionate about real estate, more specifically multifamily and I decided to launch a new project to develop an MVP of software solution that is tailored to the needs of property managers. 

You have the passion, but you want to find some connections in real life or start the ball rolling here and take that to a meetup.

Unless you're passionate about real estate and have lots of extra time to learn and become an expert at it in addition to your day job as a doctor, I'd honestly just stick with something more "set and forget" like mutual funds. 

If you hustle and you are passionate about real estate investing my gut tells me that you will have more wealth in the long run from real estate.
