We did it once with a professional painter and made out fine, but painting is way less risky than plumbing, and I have heard so many horror stories about workmanship not being satisfactory.  

I found a great painter through thumbtack but struck out on plumbers. 

Ask a painter who he likes to follow for carpentry work or sheet rock work.You get the idea. 

And account for it in the buy.Selling quickly with proper marketing is just as valuable as the carpenter, electricians, plumbers, painters you hire....even more so because Realtors only get paid for closed results.

Also do you find it better to work with a general contractor who handles everything or recommend it to be better to find specific contacts for specific jobs (plumbers. painters, electricians, etc). 

For example I currently reside in Allegheny County but I look for deals in Westmoreland County as well as other surrounding counties.

@Levi Painter, having an owner who is willing and able to provide information about the property is a must before you should consider buying it.

I'm looking for a good exterior painter that is quick, inexpensive, and does a good job.
