This mindset is just entirely detrimental to novice folks or without deep pockets. 

Well, that's just moronic advice and most often novices projecting there dreams of becoming a Musk.     

Soh,I've got 41 units and still use Excel.I tried QB for about 3 weeks last January before I gave up on it...way too advanced for a part-time investor (and software/accounting novice), in my opinion.

The City of Detroit isn't for novice investors, but can be a great market for experienced investors.

I dont think this seller is going to budge on price. the seller provided this information to me before i put in an offer and its an as is purchase but me being a novice figured that it would still be a good investment not even thinking about how the est repair cost could drastically increase.

They really do a great job of breaking down what seems like complex ideas and topics and make sure even the most novice among us understand what the conversation is about. 

It's not ideal for novice investors. 

In other words, as a novice, you're probably not going to save very much money and you are going to make mistakes that cost time and money.
