if it was built poorly it may cost just as much to fix then demo and build new. 

You can ball park it by contacting contractors and asking how much they charge to paint a room or put in flooring, drywalling, demo,etc. 

As a result we've had to demo the existing closet and have a chance to redesign.

Half the demo is already complete.

His friend lived in poverty and he hoped that by letting him do some of our demo type work he would have money to do some of the things his bigger group of friends did, movies, lazar tag, etc. 

Way easier and potentially cheaper to just demo and replace with quartz, plus it adds more perceived value, should be $3k-$5k for a reasonably sized kitchen. 

From getting my brothers & their friends to demo with me, to forcing my 100lb girlfriends to bag & carry all of the garbage to the curb to save money on a dumpster.

I do a lot of the work myself (paint, trim, flooring, demo) and that reduces my costs considerably.

Its unlikely someone would pay to demo for another SFH.
