I suspect you will have a hard time doing a finished basement and meeting building codes with those Phila rowhouses, when you consider that code now requires an egress from the basement; it's tough to do the egress window in many of them due to the tiny width of the side-yard space.

On the second example -- I'd bet you might be surprised -- that one looks pretty typical, and many like it had a front room the full width, but then the back of the house was split up with joists spanning in more than one direction, and therefore several bearing walls.
