Other than landscaping, my other main set of skills is in home repair and improvement. 

Sacramento metro is 2 million + residents, growing medical industry, majority of state jobs, and is 2 hours from the ocean and 2 hours from Lake Tahoe.

Why people fail is because these take a much higher level of skill, knowledge and upfront effort, and upfront capital.
